igus:bike worldtour highlight with RCYL – Austria

Today, Andreas Roither, Technical Sales Representative for e-chains® and cables in the regions of in the regions of Upper Austria and Salzburg, takes on a special challenge: to ride the igus:bike all the way around Lake Mondsee. This scenic tour invites us to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of the region — all on two wheels, starting and ending at the picturesque Seeache Bridge.

Starting Point: Seeache Bridge

The tour begins at the Seeache Bridge, where crystal-clear water from the Seeache river flows into the lake. It’s a peaceful launch point, surrounded by forested hills and the promise of lakeside adventure.

Nature’s Wonder: Kreuzstein & Kreuzstein Waterfall

From here, the route leads to the Kreuzstein and the nearby Kreuzstein Waterfall, a refreshing natural spectacle where water cascades over rocks into crystal-clear pools. The sound of rushing water sets a peaceful tone, a reminder of the powerful yet gentle forces shaping the region.

Lakeside Ride: Mondsee & Diving Spots

The path winds along the shoreline, passing popular diving areas and picnic spots. The deep blue of the lake mirrors the sky and nearby peaks, offering moments of quiet reflection between each turn of the wheel.

Drachenwand – Mountain Majesty & Myth

One of the tour’s visual highlights is the Drachenwand, a striking cliff face rising steeply above the western shore. A mysterious hole high in the rock has inspired many local legends. According to one, a dragon once broke through the wall — giving the mountain its name. This natural formation adds a dramatic edge to the tour and reminds us of how nature and folklore intertwine.

The Legend of Duke Odilo and the Moonlight

Near the Drachenwand, the story of Duke Odilo of Bavaria comes to life. In 748 AD, while on a nighttime ride, moonlight reflected from the lake warned him just in time to stop his horse before a fatal fall. In gratitude, he founded a monastery and gave the lake its name — “Mondsee”, or “Moon Lake”.

Promenade Views & Historic Charm

Gliding along the Mondsee promenade, the town reveals its relaxed elegance. Small cafés, boats bobbing in the harbor, and the scenic lakeside path show how leisure and landscape go hand in hand here.

Historic Highlights: Basilica & Schloss Mondsee

No visit to Mondsee is complete without stopping at two icons:
The Basilica of St. Michael, a baroque masterpiece made world-famous as a filming location in The Sound of Music; and the Schloss Mondsee, once a monastic seat of power, now a hotel with centuries of stories in its walls. Both stand as proud symbols of the area’s spiritual and historical significance.

Making a Splash: The igus:bike Water Challenge

At Seebad Mondsee, the ride takes an unexpected turn — straight into the lake. To put the igus:bike to the ultimate test, we ride it full-speed into the water. No rust, no damage, no worries. Made entirely from high-performance polymers, the igus:bike shrugs off the splash like it’s part of the trail. While most bikes would need a mechanic after a dive, the igus:bike just needs a towel. It’s waterproof, weatherproof, and ready for anything — even a spontaneous swim in one of Austria’s most iconic lakes. Dive in, ride on!

Return to Starting Point: Seeache

To complete our loop around Lake Mondsee, we return to where it all began —The Seeache Bridge. After a day full of climbs, racing, and lakeside beauty, we’ve earned ourselves a well-deserved break. With views over the water and the mountains behind us, we enjoy a moment of rest and recharge.

Now it’s time to relax, reflect, and reward ourselves. Athletic effort, natural wonder and fun in the water— all in one unforgettable day at Mondsee.

Conclusion: A Perfect Circle of Experience

Stage 4 celebrates the harmony of nature and culture around Mondsee. Every pedal stroke connects waterfalls, rock formations, historic monuments, and refreshing lakeside views — proving once again that the igus:bike is made for exploration, adventure, and lasting memories.
And not to forget: it’s not just waterproof — it’s fearless. From rocky trails to a spontaneous plunge into the lake, the igus:bike takes it all in stride.
